Tom McGarry

A tireless worker and campaigner for the sport, Tom McGarry was the major force behind the rise of the Coventry-based Triumph club to be one of the strongest and most respected in the country.

McGarry took over as secretary of the club, who operated out of the Standard Recreation Club in Tile Hill Lane, when a new committee was formed in 1967, beginning an era which lasted until his retirement through ill health in 2001,during the last four years prior to 2001 duties were jointly shared with Dinesh Darbar.

He was a elected a life member of the Warwickshire ABA and Midland Counties ABA in recognition of his work for both bodies.

McGarry – who was born in Lanarkshire – was also an England team manager and national ABA executive as well as organising international tournaments secretary in Coventry.

Triumph boxers won over 40 national titles with McGarry at the helm and Tom was a friend and mentor to many members of the Triumph Amateur Boxing Club for 33 years, He was one of the most well known and respected club secretaries in the country and a very dogmatic man who, if he had something to do, you could be sure he would get it done.

His attention to detail was unquestionable which showed in the success of the club in turning out regular champions such as Errol Christie, Steven Bendall and Richard Evatt to name a few.
